2020 Letter From Board of Directors

Welcome again from For a Good Koss at the end of our third year! Around every turn, there were new and unexpected surprises in 2020. As Sarah was always one to see opportunity in every setback, we have found new ways to spread her everlasting joy this year.

Instead of holding our own events, we have donated to other causes that are helping those in need during this pandemic. For the first time ever, we have established a named scholarship in honor of Sarah with the San Francisco Community Music Center to provide one year of private lessons to a child in need. We have also made a donation to the San Francisco Youth Orchestra towards their Adventures in Music program. Most importantly, we donated to SPARK*  San Francisco Public Schools to alleviate the hardships SFUSD students and their families are facing while schools are closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In support of the Oklahoma City community, we have increased our donation to Oklahoma Youth Orchestra and made a new donation to Oklahoma Children’s Theatre. They have each been doing wonderful things this past year to continue their fantastic missions and reach children in new ways during the pandemic.

We look forward to 2021 with both hope and caution. Foremost in our plans is that we continue to look out for the most vulnerable in our communities and do our part to cope with the pandemic. Our scholarships continue to be a safe way to spread joy and education during social distancing:

  • Continuing scholarships with Oklahoma Youth Orchestra, totaling $1000.
  • Continuing scholarships with San Francisco Youth Orchestra and the San Francisco Community Music Center, totaling $3000.

If our communities are once again safe for large gatherings, we expect to restart our events. We will assess the progress in addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and if it is safe to resume large, in person gatherings. If it is, we are tentatively planning two events:

  • The 2nd Annual Let Your Imagination Run 5k & Kids 1k on August 29th in San Francisco. The fun run was so much fun in 2019 that we’re looking forward to doing it bigger and better in 2021!
  • Rocket to the Stars in a location to be determined in the fall. This new space exploration game was planned for 2020 and we’re hopeful to launch it in 2021.

Our goal is to fund our activities for the entire year through a single fundraising campaign. We are kicking it off on December 1 (this Giving Tuesday) when Facebook will begin matching donations at 7AM CST/5AM PST. In a change this year, Facebook is matching 100% of the first $2M donated and 10% of the donations that follow for a total of $5M. We expect the full matching to end within the first 30 seconds, so mark your calendar and donate through this link as early as possible after 7AM CST on December 1!

You can also contribute to the foundation through the Amazon Smile Program, where a small portion of your amazon.com purchases will be donated to our cause.

Thank you for making this all possible. It is only through the support and generosity of friends of the foundation like yourself that we are able to continue the work we do. For those who have given to us in the last year, we are eternally grateful.

Sarah continues to touch all of us and we know that she would be finding a joyful, creative way to still live life despite what the world has put in front of us this year. We hope that you and yours are staying safe and well and that we will see you once more at one of our events in 2021!

With a joyous #HiFive4Sarah,
The Board of Directors
